Privacy policy (draft)
What we collect, why, and the choices you have.
This is a draft pending legal review. It is written to follow the spirit of the Privacy Act 1988 (Australian Privacy Principles) and the Spam Act 2003. Some details, such as the full operator details, will be added before the newsletter is promoted.
This site is operated by Fert Directory.
The short version
- You do not need an account, and the calculators and tools run in your browser. What you type into them is not sent to us.
- We only collect your email address (and optionally your state) if you choose to subscribe to email updates.
- We do not sell personal information.
What we collect
- Newsletter sign-up: your email address, optional state, and the time you signed up, plus a record that you ticked the consent box.
- Contact form (once enabled): your message and, only if you choose to give one, a reply address. It is forwarded to our team to act on, and this site does not store it.
- Technical logs: like most sites, our hosting provider (Vercel) records requests such as IP address, browser type and pages requested, for security and reliability. We do not currently run advertising or analytics cookies. If that changes we will update this page first.
- Your browser: the site may store its own files (a cache) in your browser so pages load faster on a weak signal, and the guided “Find my fertiliser” steps keep your answers in your browser session so that Back works. These stay on your device.
Newsletter: consent, sender and unsubscribing
We send email updates only to people who have actively agreed by ticking the consent box on our sign-up form (express consent under the Spam Act 2003). Each email will identify us as the sender, and have a working unsubscribe link; we will act on unsubscribe requests within five business days. Every email will carry its own unsubscribe link. We do not buy or rent email lists.
The consent wording on the form is: “I agree to receive the Fert Directory newsletter by email and can unsubscribe at any time.”
Why we use it
To send the updates you asked for, to respond to messages you send us, to keep the site secure, and to improve the information we publish. We will not use your email address for anything unrelated without asking.
Who we share it with
Only with service providers that help us run the site and email (for example our web host and, once connected, our email provider). Some providers store data on servers outside Australia, including in the United States. We will name the email provider on this page when one is connected. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
Subscriber details are kept until you unsubscribe, then deleted or reduced to a suppression record so we do not email you again. Messages are kept only as long as needed.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you through the contact page once the form is enabled. If you are not happy with our response you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (oaic.gov.au).
Security
We use reputable providers and encrypted connections (HTTPS). No system is perfectly secure, and we will tell affected people if a serious breach occurs, as the law requires.
Changes
We will show the date above when this draft changes.
